The non-thermal radiation - Cluster Merger Connection

چکیده

There is compelling evidence that at least some clusters of galaxies are powerful sources of non-thermal radiation. In all cases where this radiation has been detected, a general trend is that high energy densities of cosmic rays and correspondingly low values of the average magnetic field are required in order to have a self-consistent picture of the multiwavelength observations. Mergers of clusters of galaxies might provide large enough cosmic ray injection rates and at the same time provide the mechanism for the heating of the intracluster medium to the observed temperatures. In this paper we analyze critically all the components that play a role in the nonthermal emission of clusters during a merger, with special attention to mergers occurred in the past of the cluster. We outline the consequences of this model for high energy gamma ray observations and for Faraday rotation measurements of the intracluster magnetic field.

Relevant studies of the non-thermal components of the intracluster medium are performed at radio wavelengths. A number of clusters, indeed, exhibits cluster-wide diffuse radio emission, which is indication of the existence of large scale magnetic fields and of relativistic electrons in the cluster volume. There is strong evidence that the presence of diffuse radio emission is related to cluster...

Cluster mergers and non-thermal phenomena : a statistical magneto–turbulent model

There is now firm evidence that the ICM consists of a mixture of hot plasma, magnetic fields and relativistic particles. The most important evidences for non-thermal phenomena in galaxy clusters comes from the spectacular synchrotron radio emission diffused over Mpc scale observed in a growing number of massive clusters and, more recently, in the hard X–ray tails detected in a few cases in exce...

Radio Observations of Galaxy Clusters: Connection to Cluster Mergers

The main component of the intracluster medium (ICM) in clusters of galaxies is represented by the X-ray emitting thermal plasma. In addition, the presence of relativistic electrons and largescale magnetic fields in a fraction of galaxy clusters is demonstrated by the detection of largescale synchrotron radio sources, which have no optical counterpart and no obvious connection to the cluster gal...

Low Frequency VLA Observations of Abell 754: Evidence for a Cluster Radio Halo and Possible Radio Relics

We present 74 MHz and 330 MHz VLA observations of Abell 754. Diffuse, halo-like emission is detected from the center of the cluster at both frequencies. At 330 MHz the resolution of 90 distinguishes this extended emission from previously known point sources. In addition to the halo and at a much lower level, outlying steep-spectrum emission regions straddle the cluster center and are seen only ...

Non-thermal Hard X-ray Emission in Galaxy Clusters Observed with the Bepposax Pds

We study the X-ray emission in a sample of galaxy clusters using the BeppoSAX PDS instrument in the 20 – 80 keV energy band. We estimate the non-thermal hard X-ray cluster emission (HXR) by modeling the thermal contribution from the cluster gas and the non-thermal contamination from the unobscured AGN in the clusters. We also evaluate the systematic uncertainties due to the background fluctuati...
